Varieties of strategic reasoning in games

چکیده

A crucial assumption underlying any game-theoretic analysis is that there is common knowledge that all the players are rational. Rationality here is understood in the decision-theoretic sense: The players’ choices are optimal according to some choice rule (such as maximizing subjective expected utility). Recent work in epistemic game theory has focused on developing sophisticated mathematical models to study the implications of assuming that all the players are rational and this is commonly known (or commonly believed). 1 However, if common knowledge of rationality is to have an “explanatory” role in the analysis of a game-theoretic situation, then it is not enough to simply assume that it has obtained in an informational context of a game. It is also important to describe how the players were able to arrive at this crucial state of information. 2 There is now a growing body of literature that analyzes games in terms of the “process of deliberation” that leads the players to select their component of a rational outcome (see [17] for a discussion). There is a second reason why it is important to develop formal models of the players’ process of deliberation in game situations. A number of researchers have questioned the usefulness of models that make explicit assumptions about the players’ higher-order beliefs in game situations. In the end, we are interested only in what (rational) players are going to do. This, in turn, depends only on what the players believe the other players are going to do. A player’s belief about what her opponents are thinking is relevant only because they shape the players’ first-order beliefs about what her opponents are going to do. Kadane and Larkey explain the issue nicely:

Dynamic system of strategic games

Maybe an event can't be modeled completely through one game but there is more chance with several games. With emphasis on players' rationality, we present new properties of strategic games, which result in production of other games. Here, a new attitude to modeling will be presented in game theory as dynamic system of strategic games and its some applications such as analysis of the clash betwe...

Out of your mind: Eliciting individual reasoning in one shot games

This paper investigates the reasoning process in unprecedented strategic situations. It proposes a new experimental design that allows to obtain an incentivised, written account of individual reasoning. Those reveal that the reasoning of the large majority of participants is structured as conjectured by the level-k model. We estimate that around one third of the participants play non-strategica...

A review on symmetric games: theory, comparison and applications

Game theory models decision makers' behaviors in strategic situations. Since the structures of games are different, behavior and preferences of the players are different in various types of game. This paper reviews various situations of games. Here, characteristics of some common games are discussed and compared. Specifically, we focus on a group of games called symmetric games including Prison...

Common reasoning about admissibility

We analyze common reasoning about admissibility in the strategic and extensive form of a game. We define a notion of sequential proper admissibility in the extensive form, and show that, in finite extensive games with perfect recall, the strategies that are consistent with common reasoning about sequential proper admissibility in the extensive form are exactly those that are consistent with com...

Developing strategic and reasoning abilities with computer games at primary school level

The paper reports a small-scale, long-term pilot project designed to foster strategic and reasoning abilities in young primary school pupils by engaging them in a number of computer games, mainly those usually called mind games (brainteasers, puzzlers, etc.). In this paper, the objectives, work methodology, experimental setting, and tools used in the project are outlined, together with an analy...
